It's game day. Even though every day is busy for me, somehow game day is even more so! There are a thousand little details for me to remember and even forgetting one will mean that somebody notices. As the seats start filling up, I notice that the crowd is completely dead! In fact, as they file in and find their seats, I wonder if some of them even have a pulse. To make matters worse, the sound guy didn't show up...AGAIN...so I take the time I would have spent doing the other 999 things on my list and spend it digging through the piles of CDs, trying to find some "pump" music.
Ten minutes into the game, the sponsor drops off their script that they want read RIGHT AWAY! As I carefully place it on top of one of the stacks in front of me, my team scores! I grab at a CD to play some "goal" music and the whole pile crashes to the floor, spreading CDs, empty cases, paper (and my supper) everywhere!
To make matters worse, I lost our sponsor's script and have to fake my way through their announcement. I know THAT will mean trouble for me later but I can't worry about that right now.
The rest of the night is a symphony of struggle as I fight to keep on top of goals, penalty, icing calls and intermissions. The gap between what happens on the ice and what comes out of our booth gets wider and wider and soon I see the crowd habitually looking up at the booth to try and see what is going on.
As they leave, I hear a fan mutter "How can they have a million dollar facility and a hundred dollar sound booth?"
Ouch.
Maybe next time it'll be better. Maybe next time I'll be on top of things. Maybe next time I'll have the music cued. Heck, as long as I'm dreaming maybe next time the sound guy will show up! I know there HAS to be a better way, but everyone I know in the business goes through exactly the same thing that I do, night after night after night!
